What is Bowen?

WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY?

Bowen Therapy was developed in Victoria, Australia around the 1970's by a man named Tom Bowen.

The Bowen method is a dynamic and gentle remedial body technique. The technique empowers the bodies own healing resources to bring about balance and harmony, and therefore resulting in fast and lasting relief from pain and discomfort.

Bowen therapy uses a cross fiber muscle release technique which improves circulation, lymphatic and venous draining, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins, joint mobility, posture, clearance of dysfunctional debris, normalization of cellular physiology and tissue integrity.

Bowen is not a massage; it is a series of what seems to be very simple and non-invasive moves which are able to achieve profound physical, emotional and spiritual changes in people's lives.

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

Because Bowen is an all embracing vibrational energy therapy it is safe to use on anyone from newborns to the elderly. It may benefit any condition from sports injuries to chronic or organic complaints.

Bowen is an holistic treatment which balances the physical, mental and emotional planes. Some conditions which have responded well to Bowen include:

  • Sports/accident injuries
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Stress disorders
  • Neck and head tension
  • Whiplash
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Respiratory/asthma complaints
  • Fatigue
  • Bed wetting
  • Digestive problems
  • Menstrual complaints
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Colic
  • Learning difficulties
  • Hyperactive disorder
  • Sciatica
  • Fibromyalgia

WHAT TO EXPECT.

The treatment usually requires the client to lie or sit on a treatment table and can be performed through light clothing as no oils are used.

The treatment consists of sequences of small gentle moves, each at specific sites on the body. There is no forceful manipulation, just a light cross-fiber maneuvering of a muscle, tendon or ligament. There are a number of waits between moves where the therapist will not do any movements for 2 to 5 minutes. This time is important as it allows the body to rehydrate and rebalance the area. Treatments can last from 20 minutes to an hour.

You may experience hot or cold flushes, sensations of energy moving, emotional releases, temporary light headedness, and feel energized and/or deep relaxation. These reactions are all considered positive signs that the healing process is working. Ideally a good night sleep following the treatment is recommended.
