Eczema/Dermatitis

Eczema/Dermatitis

What is Eczema and Dermatitis?

The basic definition of dermatitis and Eczema is inflammation of the skin. There are a number of different types of dermatitis which include atopic dermatitis, nummular dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis. The terms eczema and dermatitis are often interchangeable, which can make the understanding and treatment of the condition confusing. Most commonly eczema is used to refer specifically to atopic dermatitis. However, eczema is also an inflammation of the skin and can be an acute, fiery rash or a more chronic persistent irritation. Eczema and dermatitis affects all ages from babies to the elderly and can have a variety of appearances. There is often associated itching, burning and pain, and secondary infections can occur when the skin has been broken.

Your body has a number of elimination channels to remove toxins from the body, including; bowels, liver, kidneys, lungs and skin. One of the reasons that Eczema is itchy is because there are toxins that are being expelled through the skin and your body wants those toxins OUT! If you put steroids (cortisone creams) onto the eczema you may stop the appearance of eczema; however the toxins are still in your body and need to go somewhere. Often people who use cortisone creams will develop eczema in different places or the body will produce a new symptom such as asthma or Hayfever in order to deal with the toxins. As naturopaths we aim to support the body to rebalance and remove toxins in a healthy, less uncomfortable and more attractive way rather than suppressing the symptoms and causing further problems.  Eczema is a chronic condition and needs to be treated both internally and externally.

What are the Causes of Eczema & Dermatitis?

Eczema and dermatitis are both skin disorders, similar in appearance, and are usually caused by allergies, dietary factors, emotional disorders or metabolic disorders. People who suffer from eczema and dermatitis often suffer from other allergic conditions such as asthma and Hayfever or there is a strong history of these conditions in their family.

Eczema can be caused or worsened by numerous things, including:

Diet -   Common problem foods include:

  • Dairy products
  • Eggs
  • Corn
  • Oranges
  • Artificial colours and flavours
  • Preservatives
  • Aspirin
  • Benzoates
  • Tartrazine
  • Salicylate rich foods
  • Wheat
  • Yeast

Everyone will react differently with different foods, so it is important to consult a naturopath to help identify what maybe causing the food sensitivities and resulting in eczema in each particular individual.

Common contact sensitivities are:

  • Cosmetics
  • Hair Dyes
  • Shampoos
  • Fragrances
  • Insecticides
  • Aerosol
  • Nasal Sprays
  • Synthetic resins
  • Earrings
  • Toothpaste
  • Deodorants
  • Detergents
  • Soaps
  • Cigarette Smoke
  • Dust
  • House mites
  • Pet hairs
  • Chlorine

Flare ups often occur during times of stress, as a result of a fever associated with viral illness, and during teething in babies. Eczema has also been called diabetes of the skin and results when the body is unable to process glucose correctly.

Foods, Supplements and Herbs that can help Eczema & Dermatitis:

  • Hydrochloric acid (to improve digestion),
  • B complex,
  • Fish Oil,
  • Cod Liver oil (the vitamin A in cod liver oil is important for keeping skin soft and healthy),
  • Evening Primrose Oil (6 %u2013 8 capsules day),
  • Vitamin D,
  • Vitamin E (400 IU/day),
  • vitamin C (3,500 %u2013 5,000mg/day),
  • Zinc (15mg/day),
  • Nettle,
  • Fish like Salmon and Sardines,
  • Linseeds
  • Sunflower seeds

Other Things that Help:

Remember that it is best not to use cortisone creams as these will just suppress the symptoms but not look at the cause of the eczema/dermatitis.

It is often important to look at what is used to clean the skin and what products are being used on the skin. There have been some remarkable improvements in adults and children who use BEST4baby Natural Hair & Body Wash on their scalps and body. BEST4baby Natural Hair & Body Wash is made from all natural and organic ingredients. It gently cleans the skin and hair while supporting the body%u2019s pH and leaves the skin feeling moisturised.

People ask %u201CWhat cream should I use on Eczema?%u201D There have been many people who have had great improvements with a number of BEST4baby products. BEST4baby products have been developed by two Naturopaths with a passion for skin care, they have made a range of skin care products with high quantities of ingredients which can make a difference and which are great on sensitive skin!

There have been a lot of improvements with people with eczema and dermatitis using BEST4baby Calendula Cream. BEST4baby Calendula Cream is fantastic on itchy, red and irritated skin as it contains the herb Calendula which has traditionally been used to soothe irritated and inflamed skin. BEST4baby Calendula Cream also uses other well known ingredients which soothe and calm irritated skin including Oats, Aloe Vera and Carrot oil.

The BEST4baby Balm Butter is another product which has had great success with Eczema and Dermatitis. BEST4baby Balm Butter contains very moisturising oils and butters including Carrot, Almond, Apricot and Coconut Oil as well as Mango and Shea Butter. These ingredients are high in vitamins and minerals which support the skins ability to heal.

%u201CMy 10 month old son had eczema on his face due to a food allergy. I had tried numerous creams which would not absorb into his skin and would leave a thick residue making no difference to his eczema. I then tried the Best4Baby Moisturising Cream which was a light cream that absorbed well on the area. By the following day it had reduced significantly and completely cleared up after a few days.%u201D

%u201CMy Daughter was diagnosed with the beginnings of Eczema. She had a rash all over her arms, legs and face. Within 2 weeks of using the Best 4 baby Balm butter all the dryness had gone. I was so amazed, as we had tried so many other creams%u201D

Ida and Paul %u2013 Hamersley WA

%u201CAfter trying almost every skin care product on the market for men, I tried the BEST4baby calendula cream for my seborrheic dermatitis and after only two days the dry patches had completely disappeared.%u201D

Other things to consider for people who suffer from Eczema are to reduce and change the way you deal with stress and anxiety. Things that you can try include: Meditation, Tai Chi, Yoga, relaxing walks, counseling, adrenal support (a naturopath or herbal practitioner at BEST4health can suggest specific products and herbs for your individual case).

Every person is different and every case of Eczema and Dermatitis is different therefore what helps one person may not help another. Remember, eczema is merely a symptom, an indicator of something needing attention within your body, so don%u2019t avoid it, take a look! What is it giving you?

When you rebalance your body and emotions you can get rid of the eczema and leave no scars. I know this as I suffered terrible eczema on my legs, arms and stomach. I was told that I needed to put cortisone cream on and to be aware that I would always be left with thick and scared skin.  I decided to treat my Eczema naturally and now where the eczema was I have normal, healthy skin!

Dry Skin Brushing - Bodecare

THE BENEFITS OF DRY SKIN BRUSHING

Dry body brushing has been around for centuries in many variations and in many different cultures because of the extensive health benefits. The Ancient Greek athletes would use a specialised spoon-like scraper called a Stringile to remove the grime as a result of physical activity and to encourage circulation. Where as the Japanese would regularly apply vigerous skin brushing with a loofah sponge before their traditional hot baths, to help cleanse and improve their health.

Today our bodies are exposed to much higher levels of toxins, internally and externally and the benefits of dry body brushing are even more impotant. When performed correctly, dry body brushing can improve venous blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, release toxins, exfoliate dead skin, reduce ingrown hairs along with many other health benefits. As a result the skin will feel and look much healthier and will allow better penetration of follow up body products and treatments. People can often feel the energising benefits of dry body brushing just days after starting the process.

Some general points to remember:

  • use a natural bristle skin brush, for best results it is advisable to use a plant bristle.
  • Perform on dry skin only.
  • Generally stroke upwards in one movement, towards lymphatic nodes.
  • Repeat light strokes 7 times.
  • Pressure can be adjusted to your comfort level.
  • It is best to follow the dry brushing process with some type of hydrotherapy i.e. shower or bath.
  • Don't brush more than you need to. More is not better.
  • Work from left to right side of the body.

Dry body brushing is a perfect treatment for in-salon use, often as a lead in to another treatment, or for a take home self help tool for people to use before their daily shower or bath. Dry brushing should be gentle and rhythmical and not irritating or uncomfortable. The process may leave a slight erythema or reddening of the skin due to a vascular response, but be careful not to over-stimulate. When done alone as a massage treatment the process can be done in more detail taking as long as 30 minutes for the whole body. When Dry body brushing is used as a pre treatment, the whole process should take approximately 10 minutes. It is highly effective when used before certain spot treatments such as cellulite treatments. Some aromatherapists include dry body brushing prior to an aromatherapy massage as it enhances the penetration of the essential oils and nutritive oils into the skin.

The basic method when working on a client:

  1. The client is face up and the process starts from the their left foot, stroking from toes to heel, then on the top of the foot from toes to ankle and ending at achillies tendon behind ankle (use a brush from the "firm" Bodecare brush range). Each brush stroke is followed by a soothing sweep of the other hand.
  2. The client is slightly turned to continue upwards to brush the leg, moving from ankle to calf and shin and up to hamstrings and quadriceps, covering the whole leg with the strokes moving towards the lymph nodes in the groin. (Use a brush from the "soft-medium" Bodecare brush range).
  3. Strokes then start at the top of the buttocks and move down towards the gluteal fold (where buttocks join the legs) and sweep back again to the top. Then from base of buttocks, sweep out and up towards the outside of hips.
  4. From the lower back, start brush strokes from the spine and sweep brush strokes up and out to side of torso all the way up to the shoulder blades and finishing from spine to over the shoulder.
  5. The back of the neck and the decolletage is brushed gently downwards and towards the armpits following the lymphatic flow. The bust area is not dry brushed. (Use a brush from the "Natural Face Brush" Bodecare brush range).
  6. Begin with the lower abdominal area by brushing from the navel down to the lymph groin area moving towards the outer hips. For the upper abdominal area, brush upwards and outwards from the navel towards the outer torso below the breast line. complete the abdominal area by brushing in a clockwise direction following the large intestines. Start in small circles and increase the size of the circle.
  7. Repeat the process on the right side.
  8. Brush from wrists to fingertips. Turn hand over and brush from fingertips to wrist and continue up the arm to the shoulder, working from inner to mid and to outer arm. Finish brush strokes over the armpit. with light strokes in small circular, clockwise direction.
  9. When brushing the face, use small circular strokes ending the stroke going down towards the lymph nodes. Avoid the eye area. Start at the chin, above lips, side of nose, cheeks, temples and forehead.
  10. Change to a firm bristle body brush or hairbrush with maple wood pins to do the scalp. Place brush behind ear and brush upwards to the temple. Place brush at base of neck and brush upwards to top of head, covering entire head. Place brush behind top of ear and brush down to side of neck.

The Benefits of dry skin brushing include:

  • It perks up skin colour and clarity
  • Unclogs the follicles and pores
  • Allows the skin to breathe better
  • Assists in the elimination of toxins and wastes
  • Improves the skins texture through cell renewal
  • Improves skin hydration and reduces the appearance of cellulite
  • Stimulates the skins overall function and increases blood and lymphatic circulation
  • Allows the better penetration of products

What is Bowen?

WHAT IS BOWEN THERAPY?

Bowen Therapy was developed in Victoria, Australia around the 1970's by a man named Tom Bowen.

The Bowen method is a dynamic and gentle remedial body technique. The technique empowers the bodies own healing resources to bring about balance and harmony, and therefore resulting in fast and lasting relief from pain and discomfort.

Bowen therapy uses a cross fiber muscle release technique which improves circulation, lymphatic and venous draining, assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins, joint mobility, posture, clearance of dysfunctional debris, normalization of cellular physiology and tissue integrity.

Bowen is not a massage; it is a series of what seems to be very simple and non-invasive moves which are able to achieve profound physical, emotional and spiritual changes in people's lives.

WHO CAN BENEFIT?

Because Bowen is an all embracing vibrational energy therapy it is safe to use on anyone from newborns to the elderly. It may benefit any condition from sports injuries to chronic or organic complaints.

Bowen is an holistic treatment which balances the physical, mental and emotional planes. Some conditions which have responded well to Bowen include:

  • Sports/accident injuries
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Stress disorders
  • Neck and head tension
  • Whiplash
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Respiratory/asthma complaints
  • Fatigue
  • Bed wetting
  • Digestive problems
  • Menstrual complaints
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Colic
  • Learning difficulties
  • Hyperactive disorder
  • Sciatica
  • Fibromyalgia

WHAT TO EXPECT.

The treatment usually requires the client to lie or sit on a treatment table and can be performed through light clothing as no oils are used.

The treatment consists of sequences of small gentle moves, each at specific sites on the body. There is no forceful manipulation, just a light cross-fiber maneuvering of a muscle, tendon or ligament. There are a number of waits between moves where the therapist will not do any movements for 2 to 5 minutes. This time is important as it allows the body to rehydrate and rebalance the area. Treatments can last from 20 minutes to an hour.

You may experience hot or cold flushes, sensations of energy moving, emotional releases, temporary light headedness, and feel energized and/or deep relaxation. These reactions are all considered positive signs that the healing process is working. Ideally a good night sleep following the treatment is recommended.
